The Taming Of The Shrew Review

The Taming of the shrew is a 1967 comedy/drama/romance film. The film was created in Padua, Italy in the late 1500's. Some of the people who star in the film are Elizabeth Taylor who plays Katherine, Richard Burton who plays Petruchio, Michael Holdern who plays Baptisa, Natasha Pyne who plays Bianca and Michael York who plays Lucentio.
The summary of the film is that Baptisa proclaims that Bianca cannot marry until her older sister Katherine has. However none of the men want to wed Katherine so therefore Bianca stays not married.
A student Lucentio started working as a tutor in their household just to become close to Bianca and be in line to marry her.
Next a wanderer called Petruchio came Padua in Italy to find a rich wife and then finds himself falling in love with Katherine and after a strong, angry, courtship Katherine eventually accepts to marry him and they both move outside of the city.
After this it meant Bianca is now finally able to marry and Lucentio announces that he is not actually a student but is in fact the son of one of the top men in the city. Lucentio finally marry's Bianca  and Katherine turns up to the wedding with a calm attitude and advised her sister on how she can be a good wife.

The film reminded me of the Elizabethan times in many different ways, for example, the way some of the characters were styled, such as Katherine's clothing as she always wore open collars and tight waisted dresses which relates to the Elizabethan styles as well as the way her hair was styled which was up in a high bun. Katherine's mother also wore lots of jewellery which included big necklaces and pearls which relates back to Elizabethan times. Katherine also had to wear her wedding dress for a few days due to her suitcase being hidden and this reminded me of the Elizabethan times as they always use to wear the same clothes for a number of days.
Also what I noticed in the film was the conversation between Harry and the Earl of Chambury when Harry tells him it is not a good idea to marry Katherine due to her being a 38 year old virgin and I feel this relates back to Queen Elizabeth being known as the virgin queen.
