Evaluation

I am pleased with everything I have been taught in my first project, I feel I have gained a great amount of knowledge and progressed very far as my skills have improved a lot from when I first started. I thoroughly enjoyed making use of the different techniques we were taught to create a variety of Elizabethan make-up designs. I also enjoyed researching into the Elizabethan make-up to see the designs they used to use and how I could use them myself and make them contemporary.

Unfortunately my partner was absent for a few weeks prior to our assessment so I didn’t have much of a clue of what I would be designing and I feel there was a lack of communication on her part because although she was absent I feel she still could have sent me her ideas via the internet so I could have had some practice but this was never done. However before my assessment I had some time to quickly run through Bethany’s design to get an idea of what I would be creating. I did find that I struggled slightly as Bethany’s notes were quite brief. However I feel I completed the assessment the best I could and although I didn’t get to have much practice before due to Bethany’s absence I feel the outcome was very successful as I managed to complete it as close to her design as possible. Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed this project and really looking forward to the gothic horror which is what we will be learning about next term.

Final Assessment - In the role of the make-up artist evaluation

This was my final assessment for make-up, I was very nervous because my partner was absent for a few weeks prior to my assessment so I was unable to practice as much as I would have liked but I did come prepared with everything I needed. Bethany wanted me to use a white base and create a heart around the outer side of the face. She also wanted pale eyes with a slight bit of mascara and a big heart shape on the lips which pointed down to the chin. Bethany originally wanted her eyebrows blocked out but because her eyebrows are very dark we decided to change it and she came up with an idea of having red, spiky looking eyebrows. To do this I just simply brushed upwards over the brows with a mascara brush. I feel the shape of the heart around the face could have been slightly darker to make it more defined and I also struggled a bit to create the heart shape around the lips as I had to get it just right without any smudges and I found it a bit fiddly. However I was very happy with the base as I feel I applied it well and blended it in properly.
Although Bethany changed the design last minute she did bring notes and a face chart in for me to follow, it wasn't as clear as I would have liked it to have been but it did help me a lot to follow what she wanted me to create.
Overall I am happy with the outcome although I do feel certain parts could have been improved if I was able to have more practise.

Final Assessment - In the role of the designer evaluation

This is my look which Bethany created on me. She never had much practise due to her absence; however I still think she managed to pull it off well. I did create quite a simple look for her design, mainly because she didn't have time to practise on me, I also gave her some clear instructions for her to follow with a step by step guide to enable her to get the right look. I think she applied the base very well and blended it nicely so there were no smudges, although I feel she should have applied it more to my neck as you are able to see where it stops. Also I feel she could have contoured my cheeks slightly darker like they were in my design. I thought Bethany also applied the lipstick well as I know it can be difficult to get a neat outline around the edge of the lips and make sure there aren't any smudges but I feel she was very careful and did a great job. I added three gems underneath my eyes either side to make it look more contemporary and Bethany applied them going down the face opposed to around the eyes like in my design, however I don't feel like this was much of a problem as I still think it looked good.
Overall I feel Bethany did a great job and she managed her time well. I was happy with the outcome and I feel she created my look well and managed to get as close to my design as possible.

This was my final design

Practising for my final assessment

Here I practised Bethany's design for my final assessment. She wanted me to apply a very pale base and create a heart shape around the face by contouring the cheeks and highlighting around the forehead. She wanted very pale eye make-up and for her eyebrows to be blocked out. On the lips she wanted a big heart shape which pointed right down to the chin. I got on fine with it all apart from blocking out the eyebrows which I struggled slightly with. This is because her eyebrows are very dark so it was difficult to cover them. However Bethany decided to change her design slightly to overcome this problem.

Elizabeth - The Golden Age

Elizabeth - Golden Age is a mystery and suspense/drama film and was brought out in November 2007. It's directed by Shekhar Kapur and written by Michael Hirst and William Nicholson.
This film is about the golden age finding Queen Elizabeth I facing blood-lust for her throne and familial betrayal. Elizabeth finds her rule openly challenged by the Spanish king Philip II with his powerful army and sea dominating armada trying their best to restore England to Catholicism. Elizabeth struggles to balance ancient royal duties with an unexpected vulnerability in her love for Sir Walter Raleigh. However he stays forbidden for a queen who has sworn body and soul to her country. Elizabeth then persuades her favourite lady in waiting Bess to befriend Raleigh and keep him near by, although this plan enables Elizabeth to see their growing intimacy. As she charts her course abroad, Sir Francis Walsingham keeps his masterful puppetry of Elizabeth's court at home and her campaign to solidify absolute power. Walsingham manages an assassination plot which could topple the throne but as he unmasks traitiors that may include Elizabeth's cousin Mary Stuart, without realising he sets England up for destruction.

My make-up design relates to the golden age film because of the pale white complexion, very light, fine eyebrows, pale eye make-up, rosey cheeks and the red lips.

The New Elizabethan

Vivienne Westwood

Dame Vivienne Westwood is a well known fashion designer since the late 70's and this is what bought her fame. She has won British designer of the year three times and has  influenced a lot of younger designers from all over the world by her funny and quirky take on fashion.
I have always been a great fan of Vivienne Westwood and her clothing line, however I chose her as the new Elizabethan because I feel she really relates back to the Elizabethan period with her bright orange hair, her pale complexion with eyebrows which she has lightly drawn on and her red lips.
Not only did I choose Vivienne Westwood for this reason alone but also because of her 17th century collection which she created for the Paris Fashion Week. I loved the way she related it back to the Elizabethan times but still made it contemporary by adding that modern edge to it all. Below are some images which show her historical outfits.

Elizabethan Make-up - Blocking out eyebrows

In this lesson we learnt how to block out eyebrows to create an Elizabethan look. We used two different techniques, one using glue and the other using soap. It is important to ask the client beforehand whether or not they are allergic to any products or if they have sensitive skin, if so then it would be best to use the soap technique as it is non scented.

Step by step using glue

  • Wash your hands
  • Use a prit stick
  • Use a spatula to scrape off the glue from the stick
  • Apply it to the back of your hand or a pallet
  • Apply to the eyebrows in both directions with the growth of the hair
  • Apply it as quickly as you can
  • Wipe off any excess glue and use a damp cotton bud to go around the eyebrow to remove any from the skin
  • Once it has dried apply a loose powder over the top

Step by step using soap

  • Wash your hands
  • Use a small bowl with warm water in it
  • Place the bar of soap into the water
  • With a spatula scrape off some soap
  • Apply it to the back of your hand or a pallet
  • Keep mixing it until it becomes a cream
  • Apply the soap to the eyebrow using a spatula
  • Flatten the eyebrow with your finger using quite a bit of pressure
  • Wait for it to dry before adding a loose powder over the top

Here are some photos to show my practice at blocking out the eyebrows. I used the soap technique for mine as I found this way easier than using the glue.

The Taming Of The Shrew Review

The Taming of the shrew is a 1967 comedy/drama/romance film. The film was created in Padua, Italy in the late 1500's. Some of the people who star in the film are Elizabeth Taylor who plays Katherine, Richard Burton who plays Petruchio, Michael Holdern who plays Baptisa, Natasha Pyne who plays Bianca and Michael York who plays Lucentio.
The summary of the film is that Baptisa proclaims that Bianca cannot marry until her older sister Katherine has. However none of the men want to wed Katherine so therefore Bianca stays not married.
A student Lucentio started working as a tutor in their household just to become close to Bianca and be in line to marry her.
Next a wanderer called Petruchio came Padua in Italy to find a rich wife and then finds himself falling in love with Katherine and after a strong, angry, courtship Katherine eventually accepts to marry him and they both move outside of the city.
After this it meant Bianca is now finally able to marry and Lucentio announces that he is not actually a student but is in fact the son of one of the top men in the city. Lucentio finally marry's Bianca  and Katherine turns up to the wedding with a calm attitude and advised her sister on how she can be a good wife.

http://www.shakespearefilms.com/the-taming-of-the-shrew-shakespeare-retold/
The film reminded me of the Elizabethan times in many different ways, for example, the way some of the characters were styled, such as Katherine's clothing as she always wore open collars and tight waisted dresses which relates to the Elizabethan styles as well as the way her hair was styled which was up in a high bun. Katherine's mother also wore lots of jewellery which included big necklaces and pearls which relates back to Elizabethan times. Katherine also had to wear her wedding dress for a few days due to her suitcase being hidden and this reminded me of the Elizabethan times as they always use to wear the same clothes for a number of days.
Also what I noticed in the film was the conversation between Harry and the Earl of Chambury when Harry tells him it is not a good idea to marry Katherine due to her being a 38 year old virgin and I feel this relates back to Queen Elizabeth being known as the virgin queen.

Alexander McQueen

Alexander McQueen was a very famous fashion designer, born on 17th March 1969 in Lewisham London. He had six siblings which of he is the youngest. He was always known as 'Lee' by many friends. When leaving school at 16 he was asked to take on an apprenticeship at the Traditional Savile Raw Tailors Anderson and Shepard and after at Neighbouring Gieves and Hawkes which together were the top in the technical construction of clothing.
Alexander became head designer of the Louis Vuitton-owned Givenchy fashion line and in 2004 he launched his very own clothing line for men. He was given the name Commander of the order of the British Empire after winning the Fashion councils British designer of the year four times, in 1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003.
Alexander opened many stores in New York, Milan, London, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. McQueen was very proud of breaking the traditional mold of a successful designer.
Sadly in 2007 McQueen was shocked when he found out the death of Isabella Blow, later in 2008 he devoted his spring/summer line to her and quoted that her death "was the most valuable thing I learnt in fashion". Then unfortunately in February 2010 McQueens mother died and just one day before her funeral Alexander McQueen was found dead in his Mayfair, London apartment. It was firmly said that it was suicide.

Carina Buckley analytical review - The danger dress

I was asked to write a review about this blog post "where have all the surfing cowboys gone" which was created by a fashion blogger named Rumi Neely. The images were taken in Venice Boulevard, LA and below I have written my own views about the images taken.

I find that by looking at this blog post it is very difficult to grasp exactly what the artist is trying to portray. The title "where have all the surfing cowboys gone" doesn't really fit in with what the model is wearing because as you can see from the photograph she is wearing a short white dress with white trainers. However once I sat and really analysed the photographs I came to realise that perhaps the message she is trying to put across is that she is longing for true romance.
I thought of this because Surfing could define that she feels there are no men out there who are surfing in search to find a woman. Also Cowboy can define someone as being reckless and taking risks and maybe she is wondering why no men are taking risks any more to find love.
The models facial expressions come across as she has had enough of waiting around, she is always looking away anxiously in the hope of finding her lover.
By the model wearing a short dress I think it shows that maybe she thinks she will be more recognised by a man as she is showing off more of her body but by wearing the trainers I believe she is trying to portray a message that she shouldn't have to be all dressed up just for a man to look at her or recognise her, she should just be able to feel comfortable in what she is wearing and still have someone nice approach her.

The masters of drawing

In this lesson we were all given an introduction in to drawing, we were taught how to do line work and how to use different shading techniques. Firstly we had to start off drawing straight lines holding the end of the pencil and then we did the same again but instead we drew all different kind of shapes.
Below are some photographs of the lines and shapes which I drew holding the end of the pencil.

Halloween

For Halloween Sue brought in lots of different Halloween designs for the lesson. We all got paired up and then had to pick a design that we would both like to create on one another. I paired up with Beth and we both had great fun creating our designs, we only had 40 minutes on each person so unfortunately we didn't have time to complete the whole look. However it was great practice and a very enjoyable lesson.
Below are the Photographs of Myself and Beth which we created on each other.

Over the Halloween weekend I decided to practice some more Halloween make-up so I did some on myself and also some friends. Below is some photographs of some of the make-up I created.

Val Garland - Amplified realness

Source: http://showstudio.com/img/contributors/401-600/438_320c.jpg?1315920512
Val Garland is a very well known make-up artist and works in London, England. However she originally grew up in Bristol and then went off to travel in Sydney, Australia. Whilst living there Val Garland qualified as a hair dresser and from then onwards it was when she realised her true passion for hair and make-up.
Garland moved back to London in 1994 and has been working here for over 20 years. She has worked on many different projects such as highly conceptual catwalk shows for Alexander McQueen and also done commercial celebrity shoots with Kate Moss. Garland has also collaborated publications including Visionaire, i-D, Dazed and Confused and Vogue.
Garlands great creations have now guided her to work with Bjork, Chloe Sevigny, John Galliano, Mario Testino and Nick Knight.

In the Val Garland: Amplified Realness video which I watched, I think the make-up which Val Garland created is amazing especially how she carefully created the look with freckles and made it look so realistic. It definitely fits in well with the Elizabethan era and I think it's a great idea how Val made it her own by adding in the freckles.

By watching the video "Identity revealed" I found it very inspiring as it made me begin to see things in a completely different light. I feel that the message Ellis Faas is trying to put across is about what actually describes us as people because everyone is different.
Most people are not comfortable within themselves in some way or other so they are often hiding behind a mask and it could be to do with many different things, it could be that they wear make-up as they don't feel happy about their skin complexion. It could also be to do clothes as people often wear a specific type of clothing that they feel most comfortable in. It could be that someone may not be happy with their hair so they are always needing to wear a wig or have extensions put in. Also I feel sometimes people change their personalty due to their insecurities, for example, some people may project themselves as being a really loud, outgoing person but inside they might be very insecure and I believe the reason they do this is because they are trying to protect themselves from people being able to see their true insecurities. Or sometimes people can even be more critical of someone else who they might feel is better than them and I feel they probably do this to try and make themselves feel better about their insecurities.
I feel it is important for everyone to be able to project themselves as themselves and not as someone they feel people would like them to be or to hide behind a mask to cover up the person they are or their true feelings and insecurities. It's not that I feel everyone is the same because we are not, we are all individual but we all have special qualities that can be enjoyed and accepted if only we allow people to see them.

The message Ellis Faas explains to us is..."since ancient times, humans have been using masks - in order to express power and authority; to feel self-confident; to stand out or to hide behind; to not be recognised and disappear into the masses. Not only by traditional masks, but also by disguising and ornamental elements such as clothing, jewellery, hair and make-up. But can one truly change one's identity, or is it merely a temporary transformation? And who or what defines someone's true identity? Is it the mask, is it the human being behind the mask, or maybe even the creator of the mask?"
